In "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner, we see how past events affect Miss Emily, especially her mental state. Miss Emily seems to live in a fantasy world where death has no real meaning. Emily is born into a well respected family in a small southern community. After her father's death, Emily is no longer wealthy, but she is kept in high esteem among the town residents. The only thing left of her family's estate is the family home, and the home was considered an eyesore. As time passes, Emily refuses to accept her father's death and does not acknowledge the changing values and attitudes in southern society. Much like her father, Emily possesses a stubborn outlook towards life, and she refuses to change.
             The third person narration of the story tries to show the reader the life of Emily Grierson through the eyes of a highly regarded townsperson. Perhaps this will give the reader an idea of what other people thought of her. Although she was left with nothing after her father's death, Emily escapes the consequences of poverty simply because of who she was. For the first time, Emily is alone and her reaction is isolation. Emily practically secludes herself from society for the remainder of her life.
             The loneliness of Emily's life could be a contributing factor of her insanity. After being alone for so long, a new face arrives in town, and she is sure to find affection from this chap. Homer Barron, a young northerner, is working in Jefferson preparing to lay the sidewalks. The story never reveals exactly how Miss Emily and Homer meet, but the town residents do not seem to care much as long as Homer shows an interest. After seducing Emily, Homer tries to escape her deathly clutch but is unsuccessful. Unsure of his destiny, Homer returns to Emily's home for a last visit.
