Hester and her Search for Redemption
Nathaniel Hawthorne is the author of the Scarlet Letter. This book is about a young puritan named Hester Prynne, who has committed adultery, and is on her search for redemption. There are two other characters strongly involved in this book; they are Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth. Hester committed the sin of adultery with Dimmesdale. Chillingworth is Hester's husband, who returns from Europe and finds his wife has committed a sin. Both characters in this love triangle, suffer physically and spiritually, along with Hester in her search for redemption of the scarlet letter. Hester committed the sin of adultery and was sentenced to wearing the scarlet letter. She was a Puritan, and did not forget that. She felt she needed to wear the scarlet letter until she was redeemed. The townspeople tried to shame her, and run her out of town. They wanted to embarrass her, and make her feel guilty for her sin. Hester proved them wrong by doing the opposite of what they wanted her to do. Hester spiritually grew stronger, and did not
They begin to say that the "A" on her chest, no longer stood for adulteress, but for able. He was not able to satisfy Hester's needs anymore. Once he committed the great sin of adultery with Hester, he could not bare what he'd done. As a result of the Scarlet Letter, and Hester's search for redemption, people changed spiritually and physically. They all changed because of one another. One night, he had a vision, and confessed his sin on the scaffold. He tried to mentally torture Chillingworth, by befriending him, and trying to get him to confess his sin. The true Puritans grew stronger, but Chillingworth suffered. He tortured others to be please himself. Townspeople said that the "Black Man" had overtaken his spirits. He was an old man and could not face the future. He knew he did very wrong, and didn't want the town to look down on him. He developed a heart problem and his health went downhill. The scarlet letter gained a new meaning here; it meant angel.
