I was responsible for approximately 1,500 soldiers and family members. I can remember being very embarrassed. If they are encouraged to share their ideas, then chances are they will get a better ethical answer or method to deal with obstacles or situations in the future. My father spanked my brother so hard that I began to feel bad about saying anything. That lesson turned out to be a very significant emotional event in my childhood that has always stayed with me. While evaluating the colonel's request to relocate my office, I had to think about several essential factors before committing myself to a final decision. It could be to inform the police if a personal friend had committed a crime, or admit to speeding when an officer pulls your car over for speeding. Ultimately, each individual will be the judge of what is right versus wrong in their ethical decision making process. I have always been told that in order for someone to be a good leader he or she must be a good follower and team player. Soldiers and family members did not feel comfortable making alleged complaints or addressing concerns for fear of being labeled as a snitch, tattletale, or even a non team player. There will always be mitigating circumstances in all situations. Finally, beliefs are things we believe to be true to us as individuals. There are always situations and circumstances that require a slight “bending” of the laws or rules.
