Mafia

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear about the Mafia? I know the first thing I think about is the Godfather or John Gotti. Everyone has all these ideas when it comes to the Mafia or organized crime, but till this day, no one can give you are right or wrong answer. The origin of the word Mafia is still and will be a mystery to most people. The Mafia is a secret society that originally came about in Sicily. The purpose for the Mafia was to unite the Sicilian natives, who fled from Arab and French invaders. The Normans captured Sicilians and changed their farms into estates. Thousands fled to the hillside. In the fifteenth century Sicily was invaded again, this time by the Spaniards. They brought with them punishment and torture. The Sicilian peasants sought the protection of the mafia strongholds. The mafia was a symbol of a patriotic society to Sicily. The society created a hierarchy of dons who were the heads of different mafia families. They said the top don always lived in Palermo. (Dirks) By the 19th century, the Sicilian Mafia had grown larger, more powerful, and more criminally oriented. The Mafia not only became powerful in Sicily, but all over Italy as well. The Italian gov

The Sicilian Mafia was based on the belief that justice, honor and vengeance are for a man to take of, not for the government to take care of. The Boss also called Don, is the man with all the power, he gives the orders and the family is excepted to follow them without question. The oath of a member is still pretty much the same, it's a brief ceremony where the initiate is taken into a room surrounded by all other mafia members. Even though the Mafia had influence with the police, Omerta, a rigid code of conduct that included avoiding all contact and cooperation with the authorities, bound the members. Capo is a leader of the "crew" of ten to fifteen soldiers. There are two commissions: the eastern commission and the western commission. The five cardinals rules are reciprocal assistance to any Mafia faction in need without question unless the faction were warring, total obedience to the boss, an attack on any Mafia member is to be considered an attack on all members, and to have circumstances in return, no dealing with authorities under any circumstances and the code of Omerta to be maintained under any penalty of death; the identities of Mafia members and the brotherhood's rites to be kept secret at all costs. The European Mafia was founded on a sense of loyalty and respect for culture, family and the Sicilian heritage. until more profitable protection rackets made themselves known. He is directly under the boss, but he doesn't give orders. Murder and other crimes are still viewed as "business".
