Lives of the Saints

Every person in the world is unique and therefore society should treat everyone with respect. Some people do not get this respect that they deserve so they have to prove themselves by standing up for their beliefs. In the novel Lives of the Saints by Nino Ricci, Cristina does not get the respect she deserves. Cristina Innocente is a strong and independent woman who is not afraid to make decisions that may affect her life such as the birth of her daughter. She likes to challenge the actions of others by speaking out and stating her point and as a result she is victorious. Cristina deserves the respect of the people in Valle del Sole since she does not do what society wants her to do but rather she does what she thinks is right. Cristina’s determination to change society’s views on certain subjects shows her strong beliefs and shows the people of Valle del Sole that she is truly an admirable person.

Cristina does not follow the people in Valle del Sole since they are very narrow-minded. The people in Valle del Sole do not accept a single parent having another child and as a result they disrespect Cristina. Cristina has gone through a lot of suffering not only from the people around her but also from her own life, somehow

. . .

She does not listen to his curses but rather shows her love towards him when he is in the hospital. Although her father has betrayed Cristina she understands that he is very angry that she is leaving and he is just expressing his feelings. “There was no sign now of the trial she’d been through, though she looked more sever than usual, her hair uncharacteristically tied back in a bun” (Ricci 34). After Cristina’s encounter with a snake she is returning home and she is able to continue with her life even though she acknowledges the fact that she is sleeping with a German soldier. When Cristina’s father is leaving home people come to assist Cristina bring him to the hospital but she does not want anyone’s help. Cristina also takes Vittorio to America with her and she does not rely on anyone to help her with her child. When Cristina is about to leave for America a lot of the towns people come to say farewell and they ask her to take parcels for their friends and family. Society should respect every individual since every person on Earth is special. Cristina demonstrates all the aspects of a loving mother. Shortly after the snake bites her, she does not complain and she pretends that she is unaware of the bite.

Cristina’s determination to change society’s views on certain subjects shows her strong beliefs and makes the people of Valle del Sole realize that she has reasoning behind her actions. Cristina takes her son with her to America even though she could have left him alone with his father, since she is going to visit her German soldier. At the time of her decision to leave Valle del Sole her father is outraged and he begins to yell at her. Cristina is mad that men are free to do what they want but if a woman does it she is awful person.
