Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl In this slave narrative, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl written by HarrietJacobs, a girl named Linda Brent is born into a slave family by her mother, who is anAfrican-American slave, and by her father, who is a carpenter and also an African-American slave. Her mother had been a slave for many years before Linda and herbrother, William, were born. Linda grew up on the plantation not knowing what hardwork was until her father died when she was only six years old. Her mother wasdistraught with this happening, so Linda was forced to start her life as a slave. Growingup as a slave was hard, but she eventually found love with a man named Mr. Sands. While in this slave narrative they grew fond of each other and she became pregnantwith his two children. Linda's life from here on out will be changed for the rest of her Mr. Sands becomes very much involved in the children's lives after they areborn. He says in Chapter 11, page 51, "I promise that after all
Bruce explains to her that she is now free and she could come home to be with herchildren without fear of ever being a slave again. Sands spoke these words to Linda with very kind and encouraging thought towards herwhich made her to grow even more to liking him and made her realize that she actuallyhas someone in her life that cares for her and the children, and she also found this asan opportunity for her and her children to get out of slavery and Dr. Sands becomes very acquainted with her and the children and befriendsthem by showing his love towards them and in the need of something, he would alwayshelp them out in any means necessary. Sands, in the last chapter of this book, she is sold and payed for by Mrs. Bruce and the money has been sent to Mr. Dodge and the letter she receives from Mrs. Flint's commandover them, forever. Come to find out later in the chapter, it was Mr. Sands helped throughout most of her hard times and succeeded in beingsomewhat of a father to her children. He did not buy her and set her free like he did the children.
