Three Major Psychological Disorders

There are many Psychological Disorders: Bipolar Disorder; Generalized Anxiety Disorder; Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder; Panic and Agoraphobia Disorder; Schizophrenia.... Disorders like depression, neuroses, anxiety disorders, psychosomatic diseases, posttraumatic stress disorders, are very common in the adult population.Depression and anxiety disorders may affect heart rhythms, increase blood pressure, and alter blood clotting. They can also lead to elevated insulin and cholesterol levels. These risk factors, with obesity, form a group of signs and symptoms that often serve as both a predictor of and a response to heart disease. Furthermore, depression or anxiety may result in chronically elevated levels of stress hormones, such as adrenaline. As high levels of stress hormones are signaling a "fight or flight" reaction, the body's metabolism is diverted away from the type of tissue repair needed in heart disease. In this paper we will look closer at three major psychological disorders: depression, anxiety and schizophrenia. We take a look at four main points of the disease: a) Clinical Presentation, b) Risk Factors, c) Epidemiology, d) The Role of Culture. Mood Disorders

Dysthymia is a mild case of a major depression. Some people with panic disorder may go for years without learning that they have a real, treatable illness. An attack generally peaks within 10 minutes, but some symptoms may last much longer. Certain neurotransmitters have been known to influence mood directly. Anxiety is a "system" alerting the person about a threat to his/her physical and mental well being. The term psychosis refers to an impairment of reality testing; the individual is unable to recognize illness-related distortions in perception and thinking. Panic disorder is one of the most treatable of the anxiety disorders, responding in most cases to medications or carefully targeted psychotherapy. Bipolar Disorder is a condition where there are episodes of depression and mania. Individuals with schizophrenia often have elevated risk factors for many forms of medical morbidity, tend to receive inadequate medical care, and may pose unique challenges for clinicians in medical settings. Phobias usually first appear during childhood or adolescence and tend to persist into adulthood. To say the term cancer communicates only a general diagnosis. OCD is time-consuming, distressing, and can disrupt normal functioning. In order to full understand what an anxiety disorder is, it is important to note the difference between the two emotional responses fear and anxiety: Fear is a rational emotional response to a real threat  Anxiety is an irrational emotional response to a perceived thereat.
