Dictatorship or Democracy

Two themes in ‘Examination Day’ by Henry Slesar are that of the government’s intense control over the individual person and the importance of intelligence in society. These themes are important as they serve as a warning to the reader.

One theme in this short story ‘Examination Day’ is that intelligence is not always valued in society.

In the story the government has a strong grip over the town and does not want anyone to question them. Intelligent people questioned, and so they were eradicated through giving them an examination to test for their intelligence. The unusual thing about this examination is that success was seen as negative. The government in this

. . .

” Dickies father was apparently annoyed at his son’s intelligent question and gave him a vague incorrect answer. “We regret to inform you that his intelligence quotient has exceeded the government regulation, according to rule 84, section 5, of the new code. Many intelligent people will question the government and their actions, which results in the government feeling insecure about the control they have over society, and people will want to be individuals instead of followers. The control the government had over the individual person was intense, which resulted in the termination of the intelligent people who would ask questions. Intelligence is important in today’s world for advancement and creating opportunities for others, and ourselves such as the cure of disease for our future generation. This implies that parents are in this society are conditioned by the government to suppress children’s questioning, which is a direct example of the devaluation of intelligence. The importance of intelligence in this particular society is devalued because eof the governments mission to exterminate intelligent people. ” This quote reflects the government’s control. I disagree with this type of dictatorship control, as I believe in democracy and individuality.

In my opinion, this book seems out of the ordinary, a little too eccentric to be near the truth. story ‘Examination Day’ was an example of how intelligence is devalued in society. I strongly disagree with this method of political power and control, as people should have the right to freedom of opinion and individuality. It is sad that the government cannot stand to be questioned and that innocent, inquisitive people are killed, so that the government retains control over society.
