The Necklace, Desiree's Baby and The Cask of Amontillado Many stories have great endings, but the stories that lead you to believe and think that the character is a certain way, and then all of a sudden the reader is approached with a surprise towards the end of the story, fascinates the story with suspense and irony. In the stories, "The Necklace" and "Desiree's Baby" as well as, "Cask of Amontillado" have their own unique ways of twisting the charters feelings and position. Each story is surrounded with ironic events, and the irony of the each story also takes the readers by surprise, and opens new doors wondering why each character changed and what other aspects related to that change. In the story "The Necklace", Madame Mathilde was charming and beautiful. A woman who lived a simple life, but a life that was not to her higher expectations and satisfaction. "She had no dowry, no expectations, no means of being known, understood, loved, wedded by any rich and distinguished man; and she let herself be married to a little clerk at the Ministry of Public Instruction" (38). The ironic transformation of this story is towards the end when Armand discovers that he is part Negro. Montrsor vigorously built a wall with the tier he had until he completed the last tier and sealed him up so that no one can hear Fortunodos cry. As they walked threw some chambers down below where the wines were kept in storage, Montrsor concern of Fortonado getting sick, because of his cough, showed a good side of Montrsor. The new necklace cost Madame Mathilde and her husband, thirty-six thousand francs, which ultimately led them to poverty for next ten years of their life in repaying for the necklace she had lost. At the Ministry ball, Madame Loisel's success is direct result of her appearance of wealth and high social standing, whereas, in reality, she is relatively poor. The irony in "Desiree's Baby" came to much surprise to Desiree and Armando as they both discovered at one point of the story that they were both of Negro blood and the irony in, "The Cask of Amontillado" was the most ironic story of all. "She suffered ceaselessly, feeling herself born for all the delicacies and all the luxuries" (38). The irony had a twisted and deceitful end. (175) What Jason is clearly stating is that the life she was truly living was not of her desires. The baby changed their life and brought much happiness to Armand and Desiree. With much surprise and frightened feelings herself, she approached Armand with a desperate concern. It was very deceiving, because at the carnival, it seemed as though Montresor got over his anger of insults.
