Though, to fully understand how the relationship is formed and the extent of the influence, it is first necessary to look back at the characters formative experiences which have pre-date their relationship. Although the film doesn't divulge a great deal about Alfredo before his interactions with Toto we are able to gain a number of small, but important, insights in to his life through his early conversations with Toto. When we look a little deeper in to their relationship we see observe Alfredo gaining satisfaction in guiding Toto to achieve his dreams. Alfredo performs, in large part, as the teacher who provides Toto with an understanding of the truth and harshness of the world, while helping Toto to recognise and actualise his dreams. The bigger the man, the deeper his imprint. It becomes clear that Alfredo is warm and good natured man who possesses a paternal desire to gain respect as a father figure. While Alfredo provides Toto with influence and guidance he also provides the boy with the opportunity to develop and helps to shape his dreams. While Alfredo's relationship with Toto paved the way for Toto's development, the exchange of influence was by no means unreciprocated. Though, it is not long before their special bond forms. informs Alfredo that he doesn't have any children! Alfredo replies by saying, "Well, that is what I will tell them when I have some". We observe a touching scene where Toto addresses his preoccupied mother while playing with snippets of film from the 'Cinema Paradiso'. For Toto the projector, the films and the posters all become holy relics. His father was lost at war and his mother is greatly bereaved, distant in nature and struggling to support her remaining family. The film develops the idea of how influential and powerful such a paternal relationship can be. Then he goes on: "There's nothing you can do. The Cinema Paradiso becomes the site for Toto's detachment from his mother and his spiritual attachment to his surrogate father. It is not long before Toto becomes aware of Alfredo, the village's local projectionist.
