Should employees be tested for drug use and fired if they tested positive?

             Drug testing is the analysis of body fluids to determine whether a person is using illegal drugs. Such tests are widely used in the workplace, in the military, and in criminal justice and drug treatment programs. Many places of employment call random drug test to see if their employees are using drugs. In most cases the employee would be fired if he or she were tested positive. Since the 1980's, drug testing of employees and job applicants has become a standard practice in many industries. Employees should not be fired if they are using drugs. However, if they are using drugs and are not performing their job to the best of their ability; they should then be fired.
             There are some who strongly disagree with the circumstances of the employee should be able to keep their job if tested positive. First, opponents say if an employee is taking drugs he might injure himself and/or others. The chance of a person hurting himself or others while using drugs and hurting someone is the exact same chance of a person is sleeping, not being attentive, or just being lazy. If a person uses drugs who's to say he is not going to perform correctly, in most case the employer is not aware of his employee using drugs until he has taken a drug test. Guards at 10 state prisons tested positive for drugs at a higher rate last year than inmates tested at the same prisons(McKinney 4B). You have people who suppose to be the ones to help you in your time of need using drugs, if you are in need of help would them using drugs affect your needing there assistance. Many corporate officials say that drug testing helps them cut down on accidents in the workplace, and reduces workers' compensation claims and sick days. Others claim that it helps them attract the best applicants, leaving drug users to apply at companies that do not screen for drugs.
