Sea Fever

John Masefield's poem Sea Fever is taking about the speaker want to go back to the seas again. The theme in Sea Fever is longing for freedom and an adventurous ocean is developed. There use of rhythm, imagery, metaphor and personification. John Masfield use all those things to make reader close to the sea and more understand why the speak must return to the sea.Sea Fever has three stanza and rhythm, which give it like a song. For example, line three and line ten contain the repeated consonant sound of the letter "w" and it is go like (). Each stanza star from the same stance "I must go down to the seas again". John use this for shows the theme more clearly


There have much imagery throughout the poem. "Sea Fever" is use metaphor comparing the speaker's life to the sea. It cans references to the freedom of a sea gull and a whale ((line 10). And the title "Sea Fever" shows the speaker really looking for adventurous and free life. We can see this hope easily in the poem " I must go down to the seas again". For example, images of a "gray mist" and "a gray dawn breaking" bring the poem to life by appealing to the senses. Sea Fever uses imagery, metaphor, and personification to help strengthen the themes and help the reader gain an understanding of the speaker's desire to return to the sea. A theme of longing for freedom and an adventurous ocean is developed. And also "wild call" and " clear call that may not be denied" describe a hope that is shared between the speaker and the ocean. The sea is personified when the water's surface is referred to as the "sea face". The speaker use imagery to compare life to a sea voyage and portray a strong hope for the sea. John use personification brings detailed description of the ship, wind and sea to the reader. The wind like a song " wind 's song", the sea gulls cry "sea gulls crying" like a person. Finally, images of "lonely sea' and " vagrants gypsy life" bring a freedom.
