John Locke

John Locke wtore two essays on hyman development, Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Some Thoughts Concerning Education. In Essay Cooncerning Human Understanding John Locke explains how humans grasp material lthat is brought before them. He says that when a person is born their mind is blank, and the mind gains knowledge from contact with the world. In his view external material things are objects of sensation, and the operations of our own minds within are the objects of reflection. He is saying that experience with the world and society gives you ideas because you see material things and your mind is constaly reflecting on these ideas. When that keeps happening yo


He belived that if children weren't obedient they would only learn what they felt like learning. He says that the human mind is more tender when it is young so you should teach them when they are young. You should be mild but firm in teaching kids, young minds should be made obedient to discipline and pliant to reason. That is what John Locke thought about education and knowledge. He belives the best way to teach children to read is to arouse the desire to learn in them. Rousseau belived this type of education works the best because the student learns quiker when he is not aware that there is a lesson to learn. Jean Jacques Rousseau wrote Emile in 1762 in this essay he says that educational reforms were the way to cure modern society. Claude Helvetius wrote the essays On the Mind and A treatise On Man. He also belived that productivity an intelligence will come if you are provided with the proper enviroment and education. He says that it only produced by certain circumstances. He presents in his opionon a better way to teach children to read then using bureaux or other types of methods. The pupil needs to be as selfreliant as possible, and reason about things that concern him. He says that you should not guide the pupil to much because he will learn only to follow directions. He makes it clear that you should not curb the young mind to much because it would be in worse shape then before.
