Music of the 60s
The music of the 1960s was a type of magnet that brought unity to the young people of America. During this time, songs stood for something important. Most of them included subliminal messages for such topics as drug experimentation, sexual exploration, war, peace and love. They also ignited a stage of rebellion by young America against war, segregation, racism and sexism. The spirit of the 60s was best expressed by the lyrics and, especially, the beat of rock 'n' roll. "It was an invitation to dance, and at some fantasy level...it was an invitation to make love." (Gitlin, p.37) This was the revolution that allowed the young people of America to express themselves, that moved them to express their opinions and objections to mainstream society. Rock 'n' roll was unintentionally the initiation of this right-for-freedom rebellion. Rock music has its origins in blues and gospel. In the 1930s and 1940s blacks began to migrate to the cities and brought their blues style of music with them. They sang songs describing their suffering, and they sang songs about their search for a better way of surviving. This style of music began to find its way onto record labels and earned some airplay on certain radio stations,
Dylan's music was based on emotional sensitivity and was expressed by the soft use of his acoustic guitar and harmonica. The Rolling Stones had just finished their final show of their American tour, and wanted to thank their fans. " White southern churches saw rock as the "devil's work", and segregationists boycotted the music because they thought it was some sort of NAACP plot. Psychedelic rock was associated with the use of hallucinogenic drugs, such as LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) which caused the people who used it to imagine vivid images and swirling colors with the sounds of the music they heard. They dismissed this opposition as ignorance. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were some of the first rock groups to integrate blues and R&B music. The Oakland chapter of the Hell's Angels motorcycle gang was hired by the Rolling Stones as security. Other famous American rock groups of the 60s include: The Beach Boys, The Drifters and Dion. In retrospect, the young people of America realized it was their own fault. They decided that the music would help them to do this. There were three major American rock festivals to take place during the 1960s. The earlier songs they created include Love Me Do, Twist and Shout, and Please Mister Postman. Older white middle class Americans did not hesitate to blame rock 'n' roll for this "rebellion. After the shock of this incident, everyone was trying to determine who was at fault for what had happened.
