Of Mice and Men - Loneliness

Loneliness is an inevitable fact of life that not even the strongest can avoid. In the novel Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck illustrates the loneliness of California ranch life. Throughout the story, the reader discovers the many sources of solitude, primarily being discrimination and prejudice, resulting in loneliness and isolation. I feel that loneliness is a sense of insecurity and emptiness in one's life and the only way to overcome this is to become optimistic towards life instead of always being pessimistic. In Of Mice and Men, there were several characters that went through loneliness. George is one of those characters, he and Lennie are extremely close friends, however there is still a sense of loneliness inside of George because he feels Lennie is restricting him from living his life. Crooks is another character that feels tremendously lonely throughout the novel because he is a black man and they were treated very poorly during those times. Candy is an old crippled man working on the ranch and feels very lonely because his only friend is his aging dog. Throughout the novel, George, Crooks and Candy experience a sense of loneliness somewhat different from one another but essentially

George always tries not to be so lonely by talking to Lennie and telling him things even though Lennie doesn't always understand what George says. But they don't do nothing like that. Candy says "Well-hell! I had him so long. Even though they talk to each other, it is still evident that they are both on a different level. He asks George if he can join him and Lennie on their farm when they go off by themselves. Crooks lost all his confidence and came back to realization that he was black and he wasn't worth anything, so he told Candy he was only joking about going with them. Even though they have each other, there is still a sense of loneliness, especially for George. Crooks is still living by himself in the barn and will continue experiencing isolation because the type of society he resides in is racist. He says, "You seen what they done to my dog tonight? They says he wasn't no good to himself no nobody else. Crooks is not successful in his efforts to try to avoid loneliness, he just accepts the fact that he is a racial minority and he has to live with it. He is not allowed to associate with any of the white men in the ranch. This was one of his ways of avoiding loneliness, because George accepts Candy's offer and the three of them decide to run their own farm. George is a smart, quick-witted man, who seems to need mental stimulation from a companion, which he cannot have in his relationship with Lennie. The way he tried to overcome this loneliness was to accept a puppy that Slim's was giving away so he could befriend a new dog.
