Enders Game

             The relationship between Col. Graff and Ender Wiggin had many aspects. In the beginning, Ender believed Col. Graff was his friend. ater he thought Col. Graff was only manipulating him. Should Col. Graff have been believed when he said that he was Ender's friend? How should their friendship be judged?
             When Ender was only six, he met Col. Graff. The colonel came to his house to ask him if he would like to go to the Battle School. Col. Graff acted very friendly, which made Ender want to accept. At this time, however, Col. Graff seemed very calculated in his way of getting Ender to trust him. The ploy worked because Ender said, "I'm afraid, but I'll go with you." (Pg. 26)
             Once they were on the shuttle to Battle School with nineteen other boys of his age, Col. Graff told the other boys that Ender was better than all of them. This made the others very jealous of Ender Every child had hopes of being an officer in the I.F. and defeating the buggers. Every child wanted to grow up to be the best, to be in command of the I.F. When Col. Graff said to the boys that Ender was better than all of them, he was dashing their hopes of being the best. Ender was upset with Col. Graff for making the others dislike him. When Ender got off the shuttle after the flight, he questioned Col. Graff's friendship and Col. Graff answered that he wasn't Ender's friend. Once Ender left, however, Col. Graff said to Maj. Anderson that he was Ender's friend, though Ender did not know it. (Pg. 34-36) Col. Graff separated Ender from the other boys at Battle School to keep Ender on the right track. Col. Graff said, "With Ender, we have to strike a delicate balance. Isolate him enough that he remains creative--otherwise he'll adopt the system here and we'll lose him. At the same time, we need to make sure he keeps a strong ability to lead." (Pg. 27) The strategy worked. Much later when Ender was at Command School, again isolated from others, Ender withdrew into his studie...
