Is Canada Losing the Game of Hockey to the Rest of the World
Hockey is without a doubt the biggest and most popular sport throughout Canada. One could tell this just from all the chaos that came out of our men and women's teams winning the gold metals at the Olympics. I felt that this assignment should be done on a topic that I truly love and enjoy, so that I would not have a problem having enough material to write about. Since the sport of hockey is growing around the world, I decided to find out how big of a role our country still plays in this amazing game. Are we losing our game to the rest of the world? Or is our game just expanding and maturing? In this assignment I intend on analyzing three separate articles that deal with these questions. One article deals with the rivalry between Canada and the U.S.A. Another deals with the game itself here in Canada and the third article deals with the increase in European players to the NHL. Since the NHL is the highest level in professional hockey today, all of the articles deal with this league. The Stanley Cup, hockey's Holy Grail, is the oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes in North America, predating by seven years tennis' Davis Cup. It is competed for each year by the two teams that make it to the NHL playoff fin
CritiquePersonally, I can see why the author is so upset, I'm sure if people in the U. Immediately after the game ended, my friends and I went directly downtown. The author of this article has many facts to support his statement. The one thing that Canadian players have that many European players don't have is heart. Even though the authors bring up some good points about hockey in Europe and in the U. Mike Smith who said, "Yeah, I got fired in Winnipeg in 1993 for drafting too many European players and not enough Western Canada kids. Throughout the article the author uses strong words to get his opinion across. People everywhere were handing each other beers and all the storeowners were giving out anything with a maple leaf on it, for free. Article # 1- Canada's Goose Is CookedThis article was written by Rick Reilly of Sport's Illustrated magazine, dated back to April 24, 2001. One can assume that he is really peeved because he even goes to the extent of attacking Canada's beloved Montreal Canadiens. This is why for as long as I can remember, the Toronto Maple Leafs have almost always sold out their home games. I have never experienced so much excitement in one day. A boo-ed our national anthem we would be very upset also. After reviewing the three different articles, which each has their own views; I have learned more about hockey around the world.
