The well-being of men in the United States has improved over the last few decades, given changes in the gender roles. Men are better off now that the majority of women are employed in the paid labor force because women can help to take away some financial responsibility from men, and men will feel less burden that women are helping him and no longer rely on them either financially or physically. So, men will have more freedoms and times to choose what they like to do. Men will not feel shame or other people will not devalue them strongly if they can not earn enough money to support their family because they have two incomes now where they are no longer a sole provider from the point their wife can work and bring a income to home. In present society, it provides opportunities to men to perform both instrumental and emotional role. It also assigns men the real worth to be a good father and a loving husband.
In traditional society, men’s chief responsibility is their job. They need to bring money to home. They need to work as harder as possible and earn as much as they can to provide best quality life to their family. If not people will devalue them which mean being providers are not enough to them, they have to be good providers. T
. . .
At that time, family means responsibilities to men. In addition, they also do not build up a good and firm relationship with their children since they rarely get involved on children’s daily activities. Men are no longer the sole provider in home. In present society, it does not only limit men to workforce or outside of family. Women and men both work outside, this makes them to split housework and take times with children while another partner is working. he good provider is meant they have to achieve, to win, to succeed, to dominate in order to prove they are breadwinners and define them as masculine. He changes to express his emotion and to show loves and cares to the family. But in present, men also involve socializing and educating the children. It makes them to involve and build up a real father and children relationship, not just carrying a father title in the past. It splits financial responsibilities between men and women. In Coltrane article, Susan has higher education than Gary. Susan also earns higher wage than Gary too. If they quit, their family will collapse too. It forces them to work in a extrinsic job instead of a intrinsic which means higher salary is priority. Men‘s responsibility is job and women’s responsibility is housework and children.
