Descartes
In Descartes First Meditation he is talking about how he has found many errors in things that he always believed to be true. Thus, he is now doubting his opinions and beliefs because they are all based on everything he believed to be true. After realizing this he thought about starting from scratch and rebuilding and reestablishing every one of his opinions. However, he realized how big and arduous of a task this would be and just kept putting it off. Now tha
Thus, he would rather sleep and not deal with it. Therefore, it is impossible to doubt this. He also determines that there are some things that can never be unreal. These are the principles and ideals on which he forms his opinions about all other aspects of life. He says that things that are universal to all people such as eyes, hands, ears etc. These include the concepts of math and geometry because fundamentally the answers to simple math questions such as 1+1 will always be the same no matter what. He also says that what we believe to be real is real and what we believe to be unreal is unreal. t he has time to deliberate his thoughts and beliefs he is able to restructure his whole belief system. Descartes then goes on to say that he believes colors are real as he considers them to be universal. But things that aren't universal are unreal. Finally Descartes talks about being content while he sleeps, as he is able to escape life and the fact that he has created this huge problem for himself. Descartes feels that the senses are what give him his beliefs and that sometimes he has reason to doubt them because they lead him to believe the wrong thing. He decides to attack the root of the problem which are the beliefs he feels are the foundations for all of his other opinions.
