Marijuana In America
Marijuana. The word itself can strike fear into the hearts of parents across the nation. For some reason marijuana has found itself on the most wanted list of law enforcement officials throughout the country. How is this possible when alcohol is responsible for over 100, 000 deaths a year. According to the Scientific American and the Addiction Research Foundation of Ontario, 45% of all deaths in automobile accidents are attributed to alcohol. From countless conversations held with anonymous individuals it is a safe assumption that when under the influence of marijuana a person can still have good judgement in situations. Can the same be said for those under the influence of alcohol? Everyone knows that alcohol imposes a certain effect on individuals while driving that will sooner or later result in harm or injury to either themselves or some innocent victim. The irony of this all is that alcohol is legal and marijuana, while tests and studies worldwide have shown that it is for the most part harmless, is still frowned upon like some corrupt tool used to sweep away all the innocent children of the world. This is why many people find it easy to compare the current marijuana prohibition to the alcohol
It's hard to imagine having to sneak around and smoke marijuana not for fun or to "get high" but to help get over your cancer chemotherapy, glaucoma, epilepsy, migraines, or depression. There is no fundamental reason why a constitutional amendment should be required to prohibit one chemical and not another. This all goes without even getting into the depths of how expensive it is to try and keep marijuana illegal. " (17) The truth of the matter is that the government should not try and control individuals as long as they do not put others at harms risk. During President Clinton's administration a total of 3,470,545 Americans have been arrested for marijuana offenses. Our former president was even found to have smoked marijuana at one time. People ask, "Why should marijuana be legalized?" but those who have tried it and know about it ask, "Why should marijuana be illegal?" The answer to the legality question can be answered in one word, liberty. After all the First Amendment to the U. Constitution says that the government cannot 'prohibit the free exercise' of religion, and so marijuana should be legal. It can be used to stimulate appetite and relieve nausea in cancer and AIDS patients. The economy would have a great increase due to taxes and the creation of jobs due to the need to produce and market marijuana. The American Medical Association specifically testified that they were opposed to the law. Specifically, they got the courts to accept the fact that it really was a tax violation when people got arrested for drugs, and that the government would not issue any licenses was not a defense.
