Home Schooling: A Personal Perspective

HOME SCHOOLING: A PERSONAL PERSPECTIVEHome schooling can be the most rewarding and fulfilling experience a parent can give a child. There are many advantages to teaching at home. A child will not only obtain academic excellence, but will also receive invaluable life skills. The teaching parent will be able to freely impart religious values and build stronger family bonds. The home schooled child is governed by some laws of the state, but not all. For instance, the child must receive instruction the same number of days, as do children in public school. Basic subjects such as math, English, science, reading and social studies are also required, but the parent has the freedom to choose the curriculum that best suits the needs of the child. If a child excels in a subject, or is not grasping a concept, the parent can teach at the child's pace.As the parent of a home schooled child, I've been asked on more than one occasion about "socialization". Doesn't home schooling isolate your child from the real world? To that I say emphatically, NO! After much prayer, exhaustive library research, and talking to friends who were already home schooling, we decided it was the only alternative for Victoria if she was to complete school on time, or even finish at all. She had attended schools from the desert southwest, to the island of Okinawa, Japan; from the secured confines of a military base to the inner city of Chicago. From preschool to the middle of eighth grade, she was enrolled in public school. While enrolled in public school, she was placed in special education classes for a specified amount of time daily to receive help in reading and math. Children are not grouped according to age or grade in activities. From January 199 to June 1999 we worked endlessly to bring her up to grade level so that she could she start high school work in the fall. We scheduled a conference with school officials who assured us that everything was fine. Because of the decision my husband and I made to home school her, today she is headed in the direction of becoming a chef and operating her own catering business. Instead she got progressively worse in those areas, and was spending more time in the special education classroom than with her peers. We knew at that point if we didn't intercede, the outcome would not be favorable for her. June 10, 2002 Victoria graduated high school on time.
