Violence on Television

             The facts are out there. Children and adolescents are affected by the violence they are exposed to, and they are watching television violence in increasing numbers each year. According to ACNielsen's market research, the average child watches 25 hours of television each week, which means he will have spent 7 to 10 years in front of the television by the time he reaches 70. Young people in the United States spend more time watching television when not in school than any other activity except for sleeping, and they view approximately 10,000 violent acts each year. To make matters worse, thousands of studies show that there is a definite link between exposure to violence on television and aggressive behavior. Children who watch these television programs tend to think that violence and hostility are acceptable ways to solve problems because they do not understand the reality of violence.
             This effect that TV violence has on our nation's children is a problem we must tackle swiftly and cleverly. Everyone agrees that something must be done, but there are different ways to accomplish the task at hand.
             Some believe that the only way to keep violent television programs from children's innocent eyes is to ban programs with excessive acts of violence during times of the day when children would be watching. The idea behind this is that if there is absolutely no violence to watch on television, children cannot be affected by it. However, such banning is likely to cause resentment and accusations of First Amendment abuse. Angry citizens will inevitably protest and defend their freedom to choose what television programs they tune in to, rather than quietly endure watching children's material.
