Problem with Teenage Gambling
Gambling, a past time in america that has become as much of a hobby as coin collecting. Something that as a result more than 5 million Americans have become pathalogical gamblers, half of which are young people ages 12-17. When you think of compulsive gambling you would tend to think it would be more of an adult problem, but it isn't. Due to technological advances this problem is becoming a traumatizing teen So today we're going to hit this problem hard, anaylize the problem as a whole, getting to the root of the problem by discussing the causes, and then we'll look at some ways we can solve and hopefully prevent this epidemic from growing. According to the Feb. 28, 2001 JAMA, about 10-15% of yound people surveyed in the United States and Canada report having experienced one or more significant problems related to gambling, and about 1-6% of those surveyed could possibly have satisfied the diagnostic criteria for pathological gambling. 18 is the legal gambling age in Idaho. With all of the technology out there it's no wonder kids are accessing their addiction so early. she admits that gambling took over her life. Within a year she had gambled away several thousand dollars and lost the trust of her family. In 1999, there were only two states-Hawii and Utah- that did not have some type of legalized gambling such as lotteries, and casinos. Yahoo for example has over 50 games in which gambling takes place, even though the money is real with this site there are sites which require credit card use in order to even sign up. There are programs such as Gamblers Anonymous which are there to confidentially help the person. One thing that definitily comes to mind when dealing with gambling is this overall belief that the lottery is good for the schools. During this losing streak was when she hit rock bottom. She also remembers her grandfather having to declare bankruptcy once before, but still gambling was percieved as and exciting and potentially profitable activity. Teens get involved with gambling because it's so widely available. Also the APA suggest that there be a creation of campus and community educational programs to deal with online and other forms of gambling. Tell them that you're worried about them and that there are ways to avoid gambling.
