Coaching

A coach receives little to no respect because it is hard to understand what it is a coach goes through everyday. One must only understand the barriers, obstacles, or blind spots that are in the way that hide the answers from view. This is where coaches and coaching comes in. With their assistance, knowledge, and encouragement, athletes can overcome these problems on a playing field, in a gym, or even in everyday life. In effect, they also act as counselors. Once these skills are mastered, a coach can teach kids to handle life’s pressures and give them the confidence, which helps not only in practices and game situations, but also in the game of life.

In today’s world of high school sports, being a coach can be complicated in comparison to earlier years. For example, years ago, “Coaches had limited types of plays,” as said in an interview by Adna basketball coach Jeff Beasley, not like now where most sports such as football or basketball have over twenty plays with many variations (Beasley). As time went on, more coaches started seeing greater possibilities due to more young people becoming athletes as well as minorities becoming integrated into sports, making for these possibilities. Minorities also added more excitem

Through it all, coaches are not only teaching kids the skills they need to help them later in life, but they too are constantly learning and continuing to develop their own skills at coaching.

In order to help kids to learn the skills they need later in their lives, coaches have to teach them to set goals. Planning a practice is not always easy. As a coach in high school, their pay can range from as little as “$1,500 to $4,000 and a little is added later” (Beasley). Sometimes teams will go to tournaments and will be gone for a weekend as will as constantly having practices a couple hours or more each day.

Coaching has its everyday challenges. This is because sports are not only physical, but also mental. Most of the time scouts are assistant coaches or in some cases the head coach themselves. The type of discipline is determined by the coach, which is usually “conditioning or sitting out of a game (Beasley). Discipline is the worst part of coaching. A coach, if wanted, could easily get a degree in psychology from coaching. Not everyone can be a coach, but for those who are out there, they know they are helping to develop the lives of many kids into upstanding young men and women. Athletes can make their lives complicated. Some of these problems or issues can also be related to peer pressure. A newer coach can sometimes provide a new fresh approach, but getting control of the team is not as easy as a veteran coach is.
