Marriage in 2 selected works

From small tribal village to the technologically advanced metropolitan, all human societies share a common practice that is marriage. What is marriage? The Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary defines marriage as a formal and legally recognized, agreement between a man and a woman thus making them husbands and wives.

In most traditional societies, the marriage ritual marks a critical step to adulthood. Although marriage is a cultural universal, the forms of marriage range from place to place and religion to religion. It has been known that there are two social system of marriage. They are polygamy and monogamy.

What is polygamy? According to the dictionary, it is the custom of having more than one wife at the same time. In other words, this system defines marriage to be the union of one man to either one woman or more until separated by death or divorce.

What is monogamy? The dictionary defines it as the practice or custom of being married to only one person at a time. We can say that this system defines marriage to be exclusive union of one man to one woman until separated by death or divorce.
