Is Gatsby great? Why?

Gatsby is not as great as he seems! In many ways Gatsby is great but if you look into his life he is more superficial than great. In the book all the characters have different feelings about Gatsby. Some of these characters feelings change when they find out the true life of Jay Gatsby. The life of Gatsby is not as exciting as it seems. Although he had a big house and lots of money it is the way he got his fortune that really matters. Does having huge parties to try and reunite with your true love, make you great? Does fortune make you great? Does getting money by bootlegging and being a criminal make you great?Gatsby's greatness is seen in many ways including his money, his house, his parties, his clothes and his life. In the early twenties society was broken into groups, they were poor groups and rich groups. In the first chapter only the idea of Gatsby is brought up and not a full description. To put the reader in suspense on whom Gatsby really is. Gatsby is only mentioned once in the first chapter then is not mentioned again till chapter three. The reader only finds out about the real Gatsby near the end of the book.Throughout the book you learn about Gastsby through the other characters. Roomers w


Daisy obviously was very nervous and accidentally hit her. The parties were made for Gatsby to be reunited with Daisy: 'Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just acrossthe bay and throws extravagant parties, hoping by chance shemight show up to one of them. On the grounds were a large, luxurious swimming pool and a hydroplane on the waters of the ocean. Gatsby is first mentioned at Daisy's house when Nick first goes to visit after moving to the West Egg. The reader can see this by her reaction of when she heard his name. He did this by watching her reaction: 'That huge place there?' she cried pointing. he had nocomfortable family standing behind him. 'It makesme sad because I've never seen such - such beautiful shirts. 83)After many parties Daisy did not turn up to one of them until Gatsby was introduced to Nick. Once Gatsby went off for the war he said to Daisy to wait for him and when he got back they would get married.
