Medea

Medea exacts horrible revenge from Jason. Discuss Euripides' exploration of the desire for personal revenge in Medea. In the end do we view her as a criminal or not?Euripides Medea explores the desire of personal revenge in each character, and how it is used before any mercy and reason. Medea, who has been betrayed by her beloved husband, takes divine revenge to punish him for his untimely departure, only to seek the rewards that revenge offers to ones pride. The senseless rage and revenge endured on Jason, is only reversed for the repercussions Medea has administered on his. To overcome the anger, in which Medea reveals during the play, Medea seeks revenge on Glauce, which counteracts against Creon, who was indeed liable for her exile. We sympathize with Medea's suffering and heartache that has crippled her of a superior life, yet we detest the action in which depict her as a criminal. Medea, who has been dishonestly betrayed by her husband Jason, uses revenge to punish him for his deeds and to seek the rewards which it offers to ones pride. Jaso


Yet, once she has had her vengeance on Jason, her wicked personality is exposed with belligerence and propaganda, P59, "O sons, your father's treachery cost you your lives". Although Medea will indeed suffer from her contemptible accomplishment, P49 "my misery is my own heart, which not relent", the appeal of sweet revenge is in her best interest. These proceedings are what makes Medea a criminal, for her overreactions and barbaric like behavior exclude her from any norm in humanity. Jason, in the opening stages of the play was portrayed in an evil light and has succumbed to the irrational revenge of his previous wife Medea. Counter revenge is threatened by Jason, P57-8-" Open, and let me see two horrors: my dead sons and the women I will kill", although he is unsuccessful in his revenge unlike Media. Although some may see her as someone who seeks justice through revenge, in reality, her characteristics are somewhat similar to a criminal. n's untimely departure from Medea 'for a royal bed' is sympathized by the chorus, which manipulates the audience to portray Jason as egocentric. It is quite easy to sympathies with Medea, her heart is broken and drawn to exile. The plead for sympathy and reason from the gods is his last wish in his civilized life, debating in his own mind whether Justice has been served. The internal pain and heartache Medea suffered throughout the ordeal of Jason's untimely departure was sympathized by those close to her. Medea is a woman of extreme behavior and emotion who takes to the suggestion of revenge before any reason in attempt to punish Jason's disloyalty, P25 "To punish Jason will be just". The revenge against Glauce portrays the jealousy in which Medea cannot endure. The revenge Medea has taken on Glauce and Creon, prove that she has taken the idea of revenge to the level of almost a serial killer, hunting down his victims. The revenge against Glauce really proved the evilness in her mind, as the news of the Creon's death came lightly to her, P52 "your news is excellent". Her love for Jason was evident during the play, which explains why she has so much emotion in her action.
