Finally, he leads Fortunato to an alcove, where he ties him and begins to build a wall sealing the entrance. During a carnival, he drags a drunken Fortunato through his wine cellar to find the cask of Amontillado, a type of sherry. llado" is about the main character's need for revenge and his manipulative way of seeking it. He opens a bottle of wine to drink to his long life when Fortunato does not turn back. Though he becomes sick in the process, he completes the deed and leaves Fortunato to die in the cold, damp, dark wine cellar, where no person would ever find him. As they continue through the bone-ridden catacombs, Montresor reveals his trowel and tells Fortunato of his motto, "No one attacks me with impunity," but Fortunato does not think much of these things and they continue in the pursuit of the cask of Amontillado. He tells Fortunato to turn back, saying that he will catch a cold because of the dampness, knowing that Fortunato will never leave. Montresor leads his guest through the damp catacombs, using reverse psychology to urge him forward. Montresor has been insulted by Fortunato too many times, and has finally decided to seek vengeance. His need for revenge leads to the punishment of Fortunato as the climax of the story.
