Although I was showing improvement, my reading and spelling skills were still not up to par. Walter’s class room giving her a big hug and thanking her for all her help and support. I remember praying and making all types of promises to God so that I wouldn’t be picked to read.
To many she was an ordinary forth grade teacher, but to me she was so much more than that. She was the first teacher to see my potential, but more importantly, she changed my perception of myself and my abilities. I’m not sure how effective my method was, but I was pulled out of ESL and Remedial Reading by the end of that year. I often heard the word “Dummy” yelled my way, and in some small way, these insults began to work their way into my self-perception. I soon found myself enrolled in Remedial Reading and Resource Room. In addition to being placed in ESL classes, it was soon discovered that I had learning disabilities. Walter would say, “There are no shortcuts to life's greatest achievements. My grades started to improve and a whole new chapter opened up in my life. In addition, I am currently ranked in the top 15% of my class.
