Malcolm X

             Malcolm X had many events in his life that changed him; his father being killed, moving with his sister Ella, meeting Shorty, His mother becoming insane, going to jail, converting to Islam, and so many more. In The Autobiography of Malcolm X as Told to Alex Haley, the most important event is when Malcolm went to Mecca for Hajj. This event changed his view of the white man, allowed Malcolm to find out what true Islam is, and finally allowed him to realize that he had been brainwashed all his life.
             Malcolm's view of the white man was changed when he went to Mecca. Before he went, Malcolm thought that white men were all devils and they hated the black man. When he went to Mecca he saw that no matter what color you are you are accepted in the Islamic religion. Proof of this is when Malcolm stated, "during the past eleven days here in the Muslim world, I have eaten from the same plate, drunk form the same glass, and slept in the same bed (or on the same rug)-while praying to the same God- with fellow Muslims, whose eyes were the bluest of blue, whose hair was the blondest of blond, and whose skin was the whitest of white. And in the words and in the actions and in the deeds of the 'white' Muslims, I felt the same sincerity that I felt among black African Muslims of Nigeria, Sudan, and Ghana" (347). What Malcolm realized was that white men are good except for the few racist ones in American that didn't want anyone that is not white to succeed and be powerful. Malcolm believed that the only way to end racism was thru Islam, a religion that doesn't pick favorites when it comes to color. Evidence of Malcolm believing this is when he said, "America needs to understand Islam, because this is the one religion that erases from its society the race problem" (347).
