Louis XIV, one of the best known French kings came to power when he was only four years old. Uncared for the latter part of his childhood the country started to fall because there was no one to rule it properly. The way Louis would rule the country and treat the French people was greatly shaped by the French Civil War. The Parisian Parliament's decision to rise against the crown would have Louis running for the next five years. He suffered fear, cold, hunger and other spirit-breaking events. The hardest thing for him to do was to give up his love for Mazarin's niece and turn to politics. During France's war with Spain Louis served in the army. When the Protestant Reformation came to France, Louis did not understand it. Friends were involved in the Affair of the Poisions, where eminent people had been accused of sorcery and murder. Monuments were built and seemed to be erected overnight all around the area of Paris. Many left France: those that remained were persecuted. This monument would later bankrupt the French Treasurary. Only a day after that Louis claimed supreme authority in France. Thus, giving him more time to spend with Mazarin's niece who would become one in a long line of Mistresses. Louis had a wide range of supporters. Writers such as Moliere were given orders to glorify the King. So in 1660 he married the daughter of the king of Spain to bring peace between the countries.
