Shirley Ceasar
Shirley Caesar also called the "First Lady of Gospel", is a well-known gospel singer, activist in the community, and pastor. Although she has accomplished many awards and honors she has worked hard and exhibited a lot of dedication to achieve whatever goals she had set. Caesar was born on October 13, 1938 in Durham, North Carolina. Her parents are James and Hannah Caesar and she was the tenth of twelve children. James Caesar was also known as "Big Jim". He was very important in the start of his daughter's gospel singing career. At a young age Caesar would listen, observe, and learn from the gospel quartet Just Come Four. Her father was the lead singer of this group and by the impressionable age of ten she was performing solos before their concerts. Around this age was when she received the name of "Baby Shirley, the gospel singer". In 1950 a tragic thing happened "Big Jim" died in his sleep of a fatal seizure. Caesar, for many years, believed that her father had passed away because he had spanked her earlier in the day. With her father gone she was left with her semi-invalid mother to take care of. She was also the first female to perform at Harvard University. Her words through her ministries and songs have spread the "Good News" throughout the world. To her accreditation she has received seventeen Grammy Award Nominations and ten Grammy Awards. Caesar's first big hit came in 1969 with a song called "Don't Drive Your Mama Away". This motivated her to work at a master of divinity degree at Duke University. They all had unique voices and styles. She is also the recipient of the SESAC Lifetime Achievement Award in 1986 and The McDonald's Gospelfest Golden Circle Life in 1990. Another noteworthy song is "This Joy I have the World Didn't Give It To Me". There were one hundred and forty people in her wedding party. The couple will not accept any outside public funds. In its first year of its existence the program helped a little over five hundred families. Caesar ran and served on the Durham City Council between the years of 1987 until 1991. Caesar performs about one hundred fifty or more concerts a year with her group. North Carolina College in now called North Carolina Central University.
