The first chapter seems to summarize the initial character of Quoyle flawlessly.
Quoyle begins this book "A flemsih flake..a spiral coil of one layer only...made on deck so
that it may be walked on if necessary" The second paragraph clearly states that he
survived childhood, stumbled through his twenties and into his thirties. Proulx's diction
illustrates that he did not soar throughout life, but merely struggled and barely passed it
by. Proulx could have said any number of things expressing Quoyle going through life, he
could have "passed" childhood and "made it" through his twenties and thirties. But the
words that Proulx whose seem to have a deeper meaning. Proulx intended to show that
Quoyle never really changed from childhood to adult. He still was dealing with the same
demons and still resolving issues he had formed while he was of a low age.
Later on in the book Proulx uses the sailor lore of "Cast Away", simply writing
"Cast Away, to be forced from a ship by a disaster" Once again this one line sentence
seems to summarize the entire life of Quoyle during the fourth chapter.
