Teachers: Our modern heroes

Too many people are looking for heroes in all the wrong places. Movie stars, rock musicians, athletes, and models aren't heroes, they're celebrities.
Heroes abound in public schools, a fact that doesn't make the news. There is
no precedent for the level of violence, drugs, broken homes, child abuse,
and crime in today's America. Public education didn't create these problems but deals with them every day.
Our teachers today are all too often looked over when it comes to finding someone to give thanks to. In fact, they are often taken too casually, as people tend to think that school and everything relating to it is "just another average, ordinary, everyday thing." In some cases this is true, but when you stop and think about where all of our doctors, lawyers, and other important members of society are coming from, it is then that you realize what a major role teachers have played, and still continue to play in everyone's lives.
Things have changed so much over the last 50 years that you can't even begin to comprehend how different everything is. Education, and the general state of things in our world have drastically changed. Wars have come about, different social and political movements, and people's lives and lifestyles in general have changed.
We have been so anxious to give our children what we didn't have that we have neglected to give them what we did have. What is it that our kids really need? What do they really want? Math, science, history and social studies are important, if not critical to a prosperous future, but children need love, confidence, encouragement, someone to talk to, someone to listen, and standards to live by.
Teachers provide these upright examples, and the faith and assurance of responsible people. Teachers are our heroes who ensure us of responsible citizens, which make for a bright future.
