Germany and Hitler
Germany was a country fraught with tensions-social /political allegiances spit the country apart. Religion divisions made a protestant and Catholic population divided (while protestant tended to be proNazis, the Catholics - pro Centre political party- less so). The German communist party (KPD) played off the success of Bolshevism, with such a large, industrial work force the KPD and social democrats stood as immediate opposition to Hitler. This threat was short lived, with non-nazi parties being dissolved, those not complying with Nazism left the country /ended up in concentration centres. Hitler's support came from the Mittelstand, and from areas of the rural peasantry although this social class on the whole disagreed with Nazism due to centuries of catholic faith. Hitler's Germany was not 'one' in any sense. This was Hitler's goal; 'Unity' -Volksgemeinschaft, the 'Volk' - one people, a social revolution, which heralded the break down class boundaries. He also wanted revenge (against Versailles), all allegiances would be with the leader 'furher'. Hitler wanted to destroy the social elite, idealising clean, honest citizens in the peasants ('blood and soil') Nazi loyalty also lay with disillusioned (Weimar's failings) workers a
'Volksgemeinschaft is merely propaganda'(. These techniques promoted the furher prinzip constantly. Mythologized Conflict and neo classical architecture was promoted- reflection of rearmament. culture suffered as radio flooded peoples homes with Hitler's speeches, Jazz was banned on the grounds of 'Negro dissent', the new medium of film promoted Hitler's policies such as I accuse - euthanasia programme. Contradiction continued in Nazi policy across the scale. Education, controlled by nazi propaganda, promoted anti-Semitism. The Catholics allegiance to the pope and the church opposed Nazi 'Gleichshaltung', The party and the state was supposed to be the only allegiance of a the 'volk'The 'furher' -symbol of unity above church, family, race-a Germans allegiance was to the furher. Although this seems extreme the actual effect of propaganda is negligible, tensions and allegiances existed in Germany yet they were rarely voiced - thus no documented proof exists, it was hard to get away from propaganda yet changing a nations beliefs is a much greater task-one that Hitler did not succeed totally with. This contradicted the idealised role of Nazi women ('Kinder, Kuche, Kirche'). The nazi policy which created so many jobs in the cities began having reprocusions in rural areas, workers left rurality to find higher wages in industrial areas.
