The Scarlet Ibis
Pride, one of the 7 deadly sins, can overcome peoples lives and thoughts. This is what has happened in the short story, "The Scarlet Ibis", written byJames Hurst tells a story of a young boy who's pride has overcome him, andeventually hurts someone very close to him. The story, set in the northernNorth Carolina coastline consists of a Doodle, his mother and father, and hisolder brother. Doodle, born paralyzed has somehow embarrassed his olderbrother because he can not walk. That, is when the pride comes in, when hegot so embarrassed, he decides to try and teach him how to walk, so that hewould not have to carry him around everywhere, not for his brothers sake, butfor his own sake. Pride is a horrible thing, and it shows in this story, not onlyhurting yourself, but your family and people close to you (friends). Doing something for the sake of yourself instead of others willeventually only hurt yourself in the long run. As you can see, pride did hurtthe person who committed it in the story. When the older brother says, "Shutup. I'm not going to hurt you. I'm going to teach you to walk." This truly
When the older brother says he his embarrassedhaving a crippled brother, only shows that he is rotten and only thinks ofhimself. The family was so happy together, knowing that Doodle wasdoing fine and can now walk, but not knowing they wouldn't see him verymuch. A true friend and brother in that situation would only be supportive, not ashamed of him. Thiswas the most exciting moment ever in the Armstrong family. Pride, probably one of the mosthorrible things on earth, can only come to hurt yourself, or someone close toyou. As you can see, pride is a very horrible thing (like an evil monster), andyou should never let it overcome you. In conclusion, you can see that friends are veryimportant, and we all need them, to be supportive of us, and to care for us. Pride is a horrible, horriblething, and don't ever let it overcome you, like it has overcome the olderbrother. "What are you crying for?" directed tothe older brother after Doodle had walked in front of his parents for the firsttime, but has not yet been answered, knowing his pride had gotten in the way. This is a greatexample of how pride has come back to haunt him and hurt himself, by nothaving his younger brother around anymore. The family is incredibly happy, now knowing their youngest son can nowwalk, even after doctors had told them he would never be able to walk. Telling your younger brother to shut up because he says hecan't walk is not right. "You did eh?"is one of the last words that Doodle would hear out of his fathers mouth, while the family would be together at the diner table together for one of thelast times. The family was so happy together, and it is so sad that they will not betogether for much longer, not knowing what was about to happen.
