Jim Thorpe
My name is James Francis Thorpe. I also had an original Native American. This name that the natives gave me was Wa-tho-huck. Wa- tho-huckmeans "Bright Path" . My parents were part of the Sac and Fox, and hadman ancestors from there. I was born and raised near Prague, IndianTerritory. This Indian Territory is now the state of Oklahoma. I went toschool at Haskell Institute, in Lawrence, Kansas, and at Carlisle Indian My first year at Carlisle Indian school was in 1907. While attendingthe school I displayed outstanding ability in football and track. While I wasplaying these sports I won the attention of Pop Warner. At this time he wasCarlisle's coach of these sports. I was the start on the varsity football team .
After a short stint as an actor I lectured on NativeAmerican culture. There I was widely recognized as the world's greatest all-aroundathlete. However my sports career came to a bigspeed bump early in 1913. My professional baseball career was spent with two teams. People came up with this conclusion after I won both thepentathlon and the decathlon. I had a few small parts as an actorin motion pictures. In 1950, nearly 400 American sportswriters andbroadcasters selected me, Jim Thorpe. While playing halfback Ihelped our team beat some of the most powerful teams in the country. Although I was highlyrecognized for my football skills I also shined in many other sports atCarlisle such as: track and field, baseball, lacrosse, basketball, ice hockey, swimming, boxing, tennis, and archery. However I was not a good hitter and not being a good hitter forcedme to retire after 6 years. During World War II I served as a seaman in the U. The Bulldogs where a professional football club from Canton,Ohio. Later on I waselected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963. Again I played halfback on the football team.
