American and French Revolution
American and French Revolution During the late 17th century two areas of the world started to make changes in the way they lived. These two areas were France and America which both had suffered from monarchs and their governments. The peasants who lived in these parts of the world were tired of the way they had spent their lives. Both nations show the power of what happens when too many people are abused for so long a time by starting a revolution that would change history. To start the revolution they drew up important documents in which their lives were to be regulated from. The Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen was the first step in writing a constitution for France. It announced all men were born and remain free and equal in rights. They enjoyed natural rights to "Liberty, property, security, and resistance to oppression." The Americans also had a constitution called the Declaration of Independence which was very similar to France's constitution because both took their ideas from the theories of John Locke. The Declaration of Independence stated "That all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among the
Both of the revolutions had the event of the peasants revolting against the monarchs. What they did for the problems they suffered was not the smartest or right thing to do but what they did showed how bad they had lived there lives. The first was made up of the clergy. During the hot summer of 1787 America hammered out the constitution of the United States. The French clergy enjoyed enormous wealth and privilege. France was already suffering from deficit spending and the Seven Years' War. Also they did not do any thing radical like storm a prison, kill the commander, and put his head on a pitchfork. The crowd soon stormed the Bastille killing the commander, five guards, and releasing the prisoners. The peasants were burdened by heavy taxes on everything from land to soap to salt. The following year Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence. In America the only reason there was a revolution was Britain treasury was getting drained and they decided to impose taxes on America. The French has their storming of the Bastille while the Americans had their Boston Tea Party. Months later the National Assembly used the reform of August 4 to draw up the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen. The similar ideas from their constitution both came from the ideas of John Locke and the theory that a government is designed to protect the rights of its citizens. In the end the third estate gained nothing.
