Kyoto Protocol

Ultimately, we need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. On an individual level, contacting authorities that are in charge of these fossil fuels is what the author suggests. The Kyoto Protocol was “watered down” into a weaker version in a conference in Bonn, Germany this past year. The good thing is that all nations with the exception of the United States support the new treaty. Japan, however, has yet to sign the Protocol, even though it originally had intentions to do so. Perhaps this is due to pressure from the United States. If signed, the weakened Protocol could go in effect sometime this next year. Greenpeace is asking the reader to send a letter to the prime minister of Japan, urging a signature to put the internati

There is sufficient evidence that shows what emissions from fossil fuels can do to the environment. The warming effect has brought on the melting of the ice pack in the artic, the ice fields on Mount Kilimanjaro, and the destruction of the coral reefs in the Pacific.

Opinion

We believe in implementing the Kyoto Protocol. Greenpeace is also asking the reader to send letters to one or all of the top five oil companies, urging them to change their views on Kyoto. We think that if nothing else, sending letters to government or business officials rallies behind a cause and brings the issues to the table. Not only have warming temperatures affected these places, but also continued global warming could lead to severe flooding and droughts in some areas. Automobiles, as a whole, are a great contributor of emitting CO2 emissions. Chevron, Conoco, Exxon/Mobil and Texaco currently do not support Kyoto, and Phillips has made no decision on whether to support such a treaty. The United States and other industrious countries are burning fossil fuels more than ever before, and there is evidence that there are more CO2 emissions in the atmosphere more than ever. The real reason behind not supporting Kyoto might be because the larger oil and auto companies would lose money. After all, not only do these officials have a say in how the climate will change over the next years, but we as individuals also have a say, in who we elect as officials. These five company’s heavily supported Bush’s presidential campaign.
