Man is Potential

Webster's dictionary defines man as "A human being; a hominid having an
opposable thumb, the ability to make and use specialized tools, articulate speech, and a
highly developed brain..." This definition merely describes the physical features of
mankind but it does not truly define man. Authors and philosophers have tried for
centuries to define human behavior but they all seem to have a different definition and a
different perspective about man. Perhaps it is so difficult to classify human nature due to
the fact that man is simply potential. Man has the potential to do either good or evil; the
potential to create or to destroy; the potential to love or to hate. Man is a creature that has
been provided with all the tools for greatness but yet it struggles because it is not exempt
from mistakes which it does make in the many choices that one faces in life.
People usually say that our ability to think and utilize tools is what separates us
from the animals, but in my opinion, our great potential is what truly separates our race.
Animals are bound by their intellectual and physical limits. An animal is born into a
certain habitat and it is limited to its surroundings for survival, whereas humans can
inhabit numerous habitats using their intelligence to adapt to the environment. Humans
have proven that they are not held back by any limits. They have soared the skies, gone to
the depths of the sea, and even today, they continue to explore the vast universe. Humans
can accomplish any goal no matter how great if they set their mind to it.
On the path of development however, man has taken many wrong turns as well.
"experience declares that man is the only animal which devours his own kind..." As this
quote by Thomas jeffersom indicates, we have spent ages developing tools for the
destruction of our own kind. Men are truly the primary source of great misery...
