"The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" The story starts with an introduction. The author introduces the background of the storyteller, whose name is Simon Wheeler. The author was told that he might ask Simon Wheeler about Reverend Levidas W. Smiley who is the person author's friend is looking for. Simon Wheeler has been Angle's Camp where Smiley resident. The narrator finds Wheeler in the bar room and describes Wheeler as "fat and bald-headed, and had an expression of winning gentleness and simplicity" (Twain 1261).


While Jim Smiley gone for catching a frog for the stranger, the stranger picked up Dan'l Webster and filled him up to the chin with buckshot. This makes Smiley's frog lose in jumping contest so dramatic. Smiley trains the frog to jump farther than any frog in Calaveras County. This is the foreshadowing for Smiley lost bet on his frog later in the story. From fourth paragraph, including everything about Jim Smiley and his jumping frog is told in Simon Wheeler's words. Although Wheeler did not spend many words on this pup, it is just another example to show Smiley bets on almost everything and with his unusual lucky. In later jumping contest Webster sit as still as a statue. Moment later, Smiley found out he is tricked. Smiley bets on almost anything, "if he could get anybody to bet on the other side" (Twain 1261). From Simon Wheeler's narration, Jim Smiley addicted to betting. The narrator continues with a story about Dan'l Webster, a frog. One day a stranger came to Angel's Camp. Most important thing is "he [Smiley] was lucky, uncommon lucky; he most always come out winner" (Twain 1261). Smiley makes stinger to bet $40 that Webster can beat any frog in Calaveras County in a jumping contest.
