Binge Eating Disorder

Binge eating is probably the most common of the eating disorders and affects about 2% of adults in the United States. Binge eaters also tend to be older than those with anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa and nearly half of all binge eaters are men. Most people with binge eating disorders are obese, which is defined as being 20% or more above a person's normal body weight. The cause of binge eating disorder is still unknown. Persons with this disorder are distressed by it, especially if they are trying to lose weight. About 50% of obese binge eaters are depressed or have a history of depression. Negative emotions such as anger, sadness, boredom, and anxiety can also trigger binge eating. Impulsive behaviors and other psychological problems have also been reported to be more


The major complication of binge eating is obesity and the diseases that accompany obesity. Antidepressants can be helpful for some individuals who are suffering from depression and self-help groups can also provide support for a person suffering from binge eating. "h Eat until they are so full they feel uncomfortable. People who are binge eat are usually over-nutritioned which contributes to obesity. "h Eat large amounts of food when they are not hungry. "h Eat alone because they are embarrassed about the quantity of food they eat. Other complications are depression and other psychological problems, which may come about because of the person's obesity, and also due to a feeling a loss of control over their eating habits. "h Eat what most people would consider an unusually large amount of food. "h Feel disgusted, depressed, or guilty after eating. These complications include diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, gallbladder disease, heart disease, and certain types of cancer. "h Interpersonal therapy examines the person's relationship with their family and friends and identifies problem areas. Some of the behaviors, which can signal that a person has a binge eating disorder, are as follows: "h He/She feels their eating is out of control. Other therapy, which addresses the binge eating behavioral patterns before a weight loss program is in effect, is more effective.
