Animal Farm
George Orwell once said, "What I have most wanted to do....is turn political writing into an art." What this means is that Orwell wants to take political ideas and facts and turn them into enjoyable literature. One can agree with this quote because of his novel, Animal Farm. Orwell uses many of his characters in Animal Farm to represent people or objects from the 1917 Russian Revolution. Some characters in the novel that represented people in the 1917 Russian Revolution is Old Major, Farmer Jones, Snowball, Napoleon and many others such as Boxer and the dogs. Old Major's role compares to Marx whose ideas would spark the communist revolution. Old Major like Marx invented a form of government called Animalism which is closely related to communism. Old Major is much like Marx, they each believed workers of the world must unite and take over the government, but before they could watch this happen, they died. The working class in Russia, is compared with the barnyard animals in Animal Farm, they were a laboring class of people that received low wages or food for their work. Old major tells the animals that the source of the problem is man. "Is it not crystal clear, then, comrades, that all the evils of this life of ours spring fro
m the tyranny of human beings? Only get rid of Man, and the produce of our labor would be our own. Each animal in Animal Farm symbolizes some one from the 1917 Russian Revolution. The windmill that is present in Animal Farm can be compared with the growth of industry in Russia or the Industrial Revolution. They killed or intimidated any opponent of Napoleon. Another example is when he introduced Snowball and Napoleon, there he said, "Pre-eminent among the pigs were two young boats named Snowball and Napoleon. " The revolting of the animals over the humans is related to the Russian Revolution. Trotsky was a great speaker who wanted to improve life for the people. Napoleon was a large, rather fierce-looking Berkshire boar, the only Berkshire on the farm, not much of a talker, but with a reputation for getting his own way. Reasons why Boxer didn't realize that his and the life of the animals was getting no better because of his motto, "Napoleon is always right, I will work harder". Literary elements and techniques Orwell uses in his novel are personification and symbolism. Qualities that can be compared to leaders in the Russian Revolution such as Trotsky and Stalin. We also learned somewhat about the characters by the speeches that they give; Old Major could be seen as the leader of the animals because everyone looked up to him, and in one's thoughts he talked with power. Napoleon tricked the animals into continuing to work on the windmill, by telling them life would get better. Boxer is the strongest animal on the farm and is "an enormous beast, nearly eighteen hands high, and as strong as any two ordinary horses put together". Animal Farm is an example of a political writing tuned into an art.
