Ansett Australia ---> Collapse Oral
The Administrators regret to advise that the sale of the Ansett mainline business to the Fox/Lew Syndicate - also known as the TESNA consortium - is off. All flights operated by Ansett will be suspended as from midnight Monday 4 March 2002. Prime minister, honoured and distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen - welcome to national identity 2002. As other speakers will establish, it takes much to move and shake a nation - but even more for one to be respected and remembered by a nation such as a Australia. My speech today was to focus on one of Australians most dedicated and hardworking men - Sir. Reginald Myles Ansett - however I found it more appropriate to discuss the effects of the Ansett legacy, from its humble beginning to its unfortunate demise.
Since then we have seen the TESNA Consortium, headed by Solomon Lew and Lindsay Fox, attempt unsuccessfully to purchase the failed airline. A news report aired this morning has been prepared to demonstrate Ansett's impact in its 66 years of service. videoThe termination of Ansett will leave much to be desired - its sense of identity has established itself as more of a 'home-made' airline, with more Aussie values than possibly any other airline. Ansett Australia was a valuable contribution to the Australian nation - our national identity. By 1957 Ansett Air had acquired ANA (Australian National Airways), Queensland Airlines and Butler Air Transport and was emerging as Australia's leading air freight carrier, changing its name from Ansett Airways to Ansett Transport Industries. Administrators were appointed to Ansett early September, in which they revealed that Ansett faced closure, running million dollar-a-day losses. ustralia was to set to become one of Australia's most competitive domestic airlines - not to mention an embodiment of the dreams, visions and competitive ideals of the founder, Sir. This airline is a symbol of the typical Australian ego - simple, hard-working and evermore service orientated. Though reluctant to cut airline costs, Ansett continued to fly, making its international stance when it became one of the major sponsors of the year 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. In 1969 Ansett was the largest domestic airline in Australia and continued to be until the domestic de-regulation in 1990. The year 2001 saw much undo of large corporations - HIH, One. Unfortunately ansett does not leave the aviation industry with all thumbs-up, many creditors, some staff and even a few former passengers criticising the way in which ansett was run - however, as you would have seen Ansett's departure has brought about a sombre yet cheerful atmosphere. All Ansett operations were suspended on September 14th 2001 until a bid was secured to sell the airline.
