Vietnam War

The Vietnam War is just another event or period of time in American history, or so some think. Wars affect both the people on the battlefield and the society at home. This era of the Vietnam war was no different.

The war in Vietnam began in 1957 and ended in 1975. The communist government of the North wished the United States to stop their support of the South Vietnam efforts against communism. The US didn’t actually start fighting in the war until troops first entered the small country in March of 1965. The United States army and the South Vietnamese army worked together to try and fight off the North were fighting to unify Vietnam as one communist country. Although America withdrew troops in 1973 the South still fought for their freedom and their right to a democratic government. Despite the strong efforts of the both the rebel Viet Cong. in the South and the American soldiers a surrender was inevitable, and it occurred April 30, 1975.

All of the history behind the war and the political reasons to back up the cause, caused America to be a changed nation, forever. Music, entertainment, teenagers, books, art, and society as a whole mutated from the years 1957 to 1975.

In 1957 kids did whatever their parents told

Television shows featured women at home cleaning in dresses and the kids were perfect and smiling. Their mouths opened in protest like no one had ever seen before, and entertainment changed its focus from love infatuation to peace.

Movies today which focus on war try to depict a real scene with the grotesque images of death to explain what these soldiers witnessed and felt. ” Many of these people had family members in the war as they continued to label them murderers.

Teens fought for their rights, grew long hair, drank too much, partied too much, experimented too much, all in the name of rebellion against a meaningless, harmful war. No one understood the reasoning behind their presence in the efforts to fight with the South Vietnamese. Eighteen and Nineteen year old boys were forced to give up their childhood and quickly grow up, pick up a gun and kill. It delayed the inevitable and lost many lives in the process. Many felt it was an unneeded, worthless, meaningless and costly war that did nothing for no one. But the war wiped out this image of family life. Many soldiers from this war still alive today recall gathering Vietnamese civilians together and killing them, unknowing exactly who their enemy was. They featured open heads with uncertain shapes and images pouring out, objects slightly altered in color and size to reflect the altered image of the truth in societies eyes. The war in Vietnam created a feeling of uncertainty and confusion back home in America. Society still feels the effects today because the war in Vietnam can never be forgotten because of the hold its affect still has on society and American history. Many of these lives belonged to people who had no idea what was going on.
