Mark Antony Was believed to be born in 83 B.C. and died at the age of 53, in 30 B.C. Antony was born into an already prominent Roman family. He was very ambitious at what he would strive to accomplish. In 53 B.C. he became cavalry officer under the reign of Julius Caesar. Then in 48 B.C. he helped Caesar defeat a rebel army led by Pompey at the Battle of Pharsalus. In 43 B.C. Antony became co-ruler of Rome. Just before the assassination of Julius Caesar he became a consul with Octavian.
In 44 B.C. Julius Caesar was assassinated by a group of Roman Aristocrats led by Marcus Brutus. After the death of Julius Caesar, Antony became the ruler of Rome, but Octavian being Caesar's great-nephew and adopted son, challenged Antony's rule. In the same year Antony agreed that he would become co-ruler of Rome with Lepidus and Octavian, forming the Second Triumvirate.
The first order of business for the Second Triumvirate was to track down the murders of Julius Caesar and kill them. In 42 Antony led an army against Marcus Brutus and Cassius where he defeated them at the Battle of Philippi. When the war had ended Brutus and Cassius did the notable thing and killed themselves. Antony met with Cleopatra in Alexandria and spent the winter there as her lover. Over and over again Antonys fleets and Cleopatra's fleets keep on being defeated. Julius Caesar came along and conquered her enemies and gave the throne back to her. Then on the last day of battle they both escaped back to Egypt, but Octavians navy followed them. But Eros could not do it, so Eros took his own life instead. when he summoned for her to discuss the reason why she would not fund the second Triumvirate during the civil war between the Republic and the Second Triumvirate. The two were buried next to one another. Antony killed himself by falling on his sword. Cleopatra then killed herself by placing a poisonous snake on her because she did not want to be humiliated by Octavian. One year later Cleopatra gave birth to another child by Antony.
In Octavian's efforts to control the empire he forced out Lepidus in 36 B. After Antony's death, all the power in Rome and in Egypt was given to Octavian. Cleopatra was driven from the throne. To make sure that no one else would try to take his power from him again, Octavian killed all of Antony's children after Antony's death so that there would be no dispute over the power. Her 10 year-old brother became her co-ruler and husband.
