Angel of Mercy
Heather Barlow (rounded) is an 18-year old who had just graduated from high school, instead of going straight to college, she sacrificed her first semester to college to help the less fortunate people of Uganda. She wanted to make a difference in the world. Ian McCollum (stereo type character), was a medical student/seminarian, on an evangelical/medical mission to Uganda. He was a good friend to Heather and eventually the man she fell in love with who lost his life in a plane crash while trying to unite two orphans, a sick baby and her mute sister. The setting of the book is on an old cruise ship, converted in a mission ship equipped with hospital beds, operating room and medicines. Major event of the book also took place in on the Kenyan Coast, various cities in Uganda and Sudan.Heather parents were doctors. Throughout her whole life they told her about their experiences in the Peace Corp. Heather turned eighteen, and right after graduation she decided that it was her turn to do something to make a difference in the world. She heard about a ship called the Mercy ship. It traveled to East Africa and helped people in the country of Uganda and Heather made the decision that she would be on tha
It made her very sad but even more determined that she would return to Uganda someday and carry on Ian's mission. Jodene and Paul told Heather that they believe that the only person that could possibly help Kia, was her baby sister who was left at a refugee camp in Sudan. She did not mind missing the first semester of college and leaving everything back in Florida. It took two months to get to Uganda and in that time Heather, and Ian, became great friends. One of the foster children had a serious problem, she kept to herself, most of the time hiding under a couch and never spoke a word. By this time they had an attraction to each other that was much more than friends. Without a moment to think Heather found herself running to catch the baby as the mother tossed her over the fence without any warning. Some people had traveled for months to receive medical treatment. Once Heather left the ship on the Kenyan coast and is stationed at a hospital in Uganda, however, Heather was not really prepared to face the disease, famine, and misery she encountered. Heather was overwhelmed by all of the people and their problems. They traveled from city to city helping the people from Uganda.
