Characterization in wise blood

IN WISE BLOOD BY FLANNERY O'CONNOR....
Many writers use characterization to further their overall theme. By creating a stereotype to play a certain roll in the novel, the author can exploit that stereotype to show a point. Flannnery O' Conner uses this technique with her characters Hazel, Sabbath, Asa and Enoch in the novel Wise Blood.
Hazel Motes is a very stubborn man. HAzel preaches on a street corner every night, with no success. The night that he actually does get some small response, even a chance to make a little money, which he badly needs, he rejects it because it is not exactly what he wants. While Mr. Shoats tries to make Haze some money Haze won't even explain his religion to him. He just repeated "Get out!" and "gave him a shove and Onnie Jay Fell out of the door and onto the road." (Ch. 9. PG. 80). All Mr. Holy tried to do was make HAze some money, and after his first misinterpretation of Haze's religion he wanted to learn about it, and preach "the truth" with Haze. And Haze won't give him the time of day.
Hazel is also very hateful. He doesn't respond to anybody well at all. Thus far, the person who he has tolerated ok is Sabbath, and that is only because he is trying to seduce her. As People magazine would say, In Hazel's mind she goes from hot to "spoil(ing) his rides," and "protect(ing) himself (from her)." (Ch 9 PG 74.) This just shows that Haze doesn't start liking people, ever. HAze plays the stereotype of people who are just plain jerks.
Sabbath Hawk's is characterized as an innocent seeming girl who was born into a bad situation. Her innocence, though commonly disproved, seems to remain constant up to this point on the novel, partially because the first time you meet her she is preaching and described as a child. " ' There''s nothing for your pain but Jesus.' &quo...
