Many writers use characterization to further their overall theme. By creating a stereotype to play a certain roll in the novel, the author can exploit that stereotype to show a point. Flannnery O’ Conner uses this technique with her characters Hazel, Sabbath, Asa and Enoch in the novel Wise Blood.
Hazel Motes is a very stubborn man. HAzel preaches on a street corner every night, with no success. The night that he actually does get some small response, even a chance to make a little money, which he badly needs, he rejects it because it is not exactly what he wants. While Mr. Shoats tries to make Haze some money Haze won’t even explain his religion to him. He just repeated “Get out!” and “gave him a shove and Onnie Jay Fell out of the door and onto the road.” (Ch. 9. PG. 80). All Mr. Holy tried to do was make HAze some money, and after his first misinterpretation of Haze’s religion he wanted to learn about it, and preach “the truth” with Haze. And Haze won’t give him the time of day.
