The Catcher in the Rye

The biggest thing that I have learned from this novel is the type of language that was used by Holden, and by the other people in the time period. “Jane said he was supposed to be a playwright or some goddamn thing, but all I ever saw him do was booze and listen to every single goddamn mystery program on the radio. “Boy I sat down at that goddamn bar until around one o’clock or so, getting drunk as a bastard. What I learned the most was the extreme amounts of story telling that the teenagers did to impress each other. 81) He often says, “If you want to know the truth,” when he wants to add on to a previous statement, because he doesn’t want to sound like a sissy. I think that the book sends a good message about finding yourself, and what you’re all about. ” Another part of Holdens language was giving descriptions and ending them with “and all” or “or everything. An example would be the fact that he drank and smoked heavily to fit in with his fellow students. The main lesson there is to be learned is the fact that growing up is good, but growing phony isn’t. Often times, when he thinks he has said something dumb, he will joke about it to justify it. The main reason I would recommend this book to a friend is the fact that most teenagers can relate to this book, being that most teenagers are struggling to find out who they are, while trying to prove to everyone that they are a man or a woman. Another good message that this book sends is it tells the reader that being phony doesn’t help to get you anywhere, and most people will see your phoniness anyways.

It is in my strong opinion that this novel will be as popular as it is now, if not more.
