Floods in Bible

The Epic of Gilgamesh is very interesting to Christians because it is very similar to Noah and his ark in the bible. In both events, a great flood takes place.

A flood destroys most of mankind except for those on the ark. These floods represent rebirth, a new beginning for mankind and the gods or God's wrath. God decided it would rain on Earth for forty days and forty nights and the flood would last 150 days.

The gods cry in the Epic of Gilgamesh. Their tears became rain and last for six days and nights.

. . .

The ark was 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide and 30 cubits high. God felt as if the wickedness of man had taken over the Earth. In the Bible, Noah releases a bird to find land. Utnapishtim is saved because he obeys the god's order to build a boat. Noah was saved and he obeyed God's orders to build an ark. After the flood, a bird is released to find land. Noah was the symbol of God's mercy and was the source of salvation for the creation and hope for re-creation after the flood. The roof was finished within a cubit from the top and the ark was shaped like a rectangle.

The ark in Gilgamesh was shaped like a square and boat built by Utnapishtim. The flood destroyed his creation, which has become corrupt and evil. God floods the earth because men are wicked and the earth is full of violence. The boat measured 120 cubits on each side and the ground space was one acre.

In both stories,a good man is saved. God told him to put the door of the ark on the side and the ark should have upper, middle and lower decks. Mankind, however, was destroyed for different reasons.
